Benton Community wrapped it regular season with non-conference wins over Union of LaPorte City and Oelwein last week.

Last Monday Benton hosted Union and won the first game of a doubleheader, 7-5.

Benton had six hits, with Mark Himmelsbach going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Ethan Brown doubled in one run. Levi Montague had a double and two RBIs. Tony Stenberg and Reese Thompson drew two walks each and Thompson scored two runs and stole one base.

Montague was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and allowing three hits. Wes Anderson threw for two outs, allowing five runs, striking one and allowing two hits. Jake Stenberg closed the game, allowing one hit and getting the final out.

In fielding, Justin Lopata had two putouts and five assists at second base.

The Bobcats rolled to a 13-0 win in five innings in the second game, amassing 17 hits in the contest.

Alex Weekly struck out three and allowed six hits in his shutout performance on the mound.

Tony Stenberg was 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Weekly was 3 for 3 with three RBIs and two doubles. Himmelsbach was 2 for 3. Wes Anderson hit a solo home run. Ethan Brown was 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Thompson was 2 for 2 with the RBIs. Parker Stallman was 2 for 3 with two RBIs.

Benton closed the regular season with an 11-1 win in five innings at Oelwein.

Jake Stenberg allowed two hits and struck out two to take the win.

The team had 16 hits. Brown was 3 for 4. Himmelsbach was 2 for 3 with tow RBIs. Weekly was 2 for 3. Tony Stenberg singled in one run. Anderson had a single and one RBI. Thompson was 2 for 3 with one RBI. Montague was 2 for 3 with four RBIs and a double. Stallman was 2 for 3 with one RBI.

Last Friday Benton won the first game in district action over Williamsburg on the Raiders’ home diamond, 3-0.

Winning pitcher Brown threw a one-hitter while striking out 12.

The team had seven hits. Montague was 2 for 3 with one RBI. Thompson had a double and one RBI. Anderson also had a double and one RBI. Stenberg added a double. Himmelsbach stole one base and had one single. The Bobcats had no errors.

The Bobcats won the district title with a 7-1 victory over Clear Creek-Amana Monday night at Williamsburg.

The Bobcats advance to substate action this Wednesday, July 22, against Marion at Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The game starts at 7 p.m.

Winning pitcher Jordan Kaiser threw a two-hitter, striking out eight and allowed one run.

The Bobcats had eight hits. Brown was 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs. He also stole one base and scored two runs. Montague doubled in one run. Kaiser also drove in one run. Thompson had a solo home run. Getting singles were Himmelsbach, Weekly and Stallman.

Class 3A state tournament action starts at noon next Tuesday at Principal Park in Des Moines, and continues on Friday and Saturday.

Benton softball

The Benton Community softball season ended Saturday, July 11, at Oxford with a 9-0 loss to top-ranked Clear Creek-Amana in district tournament play.

Benton was held to one hit, with Kelly Wolter picking up a single.

Abby Moser had five earned runs on the mound, and allowed four hits in the opening inning.

Ellie Embray closed the game in 6 1/3 innings of work, striking out three and allowing three hits.

The team had four fielding errors.
