Should texting while driving be banned?

By KALEY HAMILTON

Texting while driving has been a huge issue lately. Federal safety regulators have proposed a set of guidelines to set laws for states that would ban text messaging while driving. While Iowa has passed the law of banning text messaging, the news has been talking about this a lot. It has been said that about 50 percent of teen’s text while driving.

I personally believe that banning text messaging while driving is great, because there is not a good enough reason for anyone to be texting and risking your life or somebody else’s, especially since it could cause a an accident and severely injure or kill someone..

While the popularity of mobile phones has grown enormously in the past two decades, it's still unclear how greatly cell phone calls and texting contribute to car crashes. What is clear is that talking on the phone and texting behind the wheel both lead to distraction, and driver inattention is the leading cause of car accidents.

With this being an issue many people don’t believe that this law should be passed. Many people will still break the law when it is passed.

With this law maybe we can hope it will reduce accidents, and show people how important it is to not text and drive.

Things for Success

By SALINA CANTU

It’s very important for students to earn every credit possible in high school, so they can graduate and go on to the college of their choice. One also needs to take tough classes before attending college, so they will be ready for the rigorous coursework, the high expectations, and because it’s a good experience for them. Important classes to take for your future are: calculus, algebra, physics, English, government, biology, and composition.

When someone fails a class, one would hope they would work harder, study more, and do whatever they possibly could for extra credit to help get their grade back up. If they had to retake it hopefully they would try to pay attention better and be more involved. It is also important to get enough sleep and be ready and motivated for school.

To be successful and to get ready for college a student needs to pass their classes, get a good grade point average, take rigorous classes, and stay motivated.

The great transition

By BREANNA ROBERTSON

A big transition is going from junior high to high school. Students have to make a lot of changes when going from one school to another. There's a big difference between junior high and high school. Here at Belle Plaine, there are many more people, smaller lockers, more classes, and more clubs and activities to participate in. One has to get used too many changes when they start at the high school. With the 2009-2010 school year coming to a close this is what current freshmen had to say about their first year at the high school.

What do you miss the most about junior high?

Kayla Bergom, "Easy work, not a lot of stairs"

Hannah Bean, “Barely any homework, the classes were way easier, and not as many steps to go up."

Alex Gallardo, "Mrs. Harting, it was funny in her adviser in eighth grade."

Liam Suttles, "The lockers!"

What is your favorite part about being in high school?

Kayla Bergom, "The people you get to meet."

Hannah Bean, "More freedom and meeting new people."

Alex Gallardo, "The P.E. class."

Liam Suttles, "More serious, the activities you can do, and P.E. class"

What do you find most difficult about high school?

Kayla Bergom, "Physical Science”

Hannah Bean, "Algebra and Physical Science"

Alex Gallardo, "Math"

Liam Suttles, "Algebra"

What advice would you give the eighth graders?

Kayla Bergom, "Don't think you're all that"

Hannah Bean, "Don't be mean and don't think you're all that. Just be nice and polite!"

Alex Gallardo, "If you put your mind to it you can do well in school."

Liam Suttles, "Don't lose your lunch ticket."

What would you like to improve?

Kayla Bergom, "Grades"

Hannah Bean, "My algebra grade if I could."

Alex Gallardo, "English and math grades"

Liam Suttles, "My algebra grade."

What's your favorite sport in high school?

Kayla Bergom, "Cheerleading"

Hannah Bean, "Volleyball"

Alex Gallardo, "Track"

Liam, "Cross-Country"

Are you friends with a lot of the older classmen?

Kayla Bergom, "Yes"

Hannah Bean, "Nope"

Alex Gallardo, "I wouldn't say a lot, but I'm friends with some of them.”

Liam Suttles, "Not really"

It might be a big move going from the junior high to high school, but if you follow some simple rules you will enjoy the transition. Remember, don't think you're better than everybody else, stay on the teachers’ good side, get your homework done, and make sure to study for tests. If you follow these simple rules high school will be a success for everybody.

Malnutrition vs. nutrition

By BLAKE EBERHART

Childhood nutrition is a subject that covers from malnutrition to obesity. There are many frightening facts about this. It goes from kids being starved to death to kids being overly obese. Malnutrition can be caused by many things for example: parents that don’t make enough money to buy the proper food to feed a child. Malnutrition can also involve kids not getting the right nutrients and proteins. Dieting can have a big effect on malnutrition because one may have to cut out foods that are essential to nutrition such as a no meat diet.

Good nutrition will lead to healthy kids and or more fit kids. Good nutrition may give you a longer healthier life. Nutritious food is healthy and really good for your body. If one wants to look good this is the best route to go. If one does want to lose weight try exercising; that is the best way to lose weight. Nutrition should be one of the first things that comes to the mind before deciding to shovel a bucket of ice cream down.

Obesity is one of the worst things effecting kids today. Obesity if you don’t know is when kids eat too much because they are depressed or because they just like to eat. Many cases dealing with obesity involve eating too much. This is very unhealthy for the human body. People with obesity are normally very over weight and this can cause many harmful effects on the body such as diabetes, heart disease, and many cancers. Many kids suffer from being obese. Year after year kids are getting lazier. Children in this nation need to change. Exercise and eating healthy will help this issue a lot.

All children need a good nutritious diet; it will make them healthier. This will better our kids and help them to lead a healthy lifestyle. Nutrition is the way to go for all people and kids.

To write love on her arms

By MELISSA STULL

TWLOHA is a non-profit movement that is dedicated to help people find help with depression, addiction, self-harm, and suicide. The group started out as a group of friends trying to help one of their friends. TWLOHA tells their story in hope that teens will read and try to seek help before it’s too late.

According to The World Health Organization, 121 million people in the world suffer from depression; 18 million in the United States (-The National Institute of Mental Health). It has been reported that 30 percent of teens with depression start out with substance abuse issues. Believe it or not, 2/3 of teens with depression never get treatment! Therefore TWLOHA is set out to help people suffering with these problems.

Some of the issues TWLOHA treats are the following:

• Addiction- Does not discriminate from age, gender, or class; 20 percent of teens will suffer from depression before adulthood.

• Self-Injury- is mostly caused by untreated depression. Some examples of self-injury are: cutting, burning, inserting objects into the skin, bruising or breaking bones, and picking or interfering with a wound. Even though these ways of dealing may seem to work out at the time in the long run they just lead to deeper things and darker mental thoughts. Self-harm is more likely among females.

• Suicide- it is a known fact that approximately 100,000 people die from suicide in a year’s time. In the last 45 years the suicide rate has increased 60 percent worldwide. Suicide attempts are 20 times more frequent than a completed suicide. A global count of suicides, 55 percent are in the age group between 15 and 44. 45 percent are aged 45 years and over. Males are 4 times more likely to die from suicide, but females are more likely to attempt suicide than males.

TWLOHA is a nation wide organization. They travel around the United States to give speeches and for bands to play. They talk about why it is important to seek help. Renee, the group founder talks about her story and how she was saved, it is so interesting to hear how far she has gotten. TWLOHA is also a goal, believing better life was possible because better life is possible. Don’t give up you can still seek help!

Teen Suicide

By CHEYANN MARKHAM

When it comes to teen suicide, the statistics make it clear that attempted suicide is a big deal as it relates to the youth. Additionally, suicide is one of the leading causes of death for teenagers.

The question is why would teens with their whole lives, careers, and families ahead of them want to commit suicide? For some teenagers, sometimes their lives are overwhelming and it makes them want to take their own life. They want to escape the overwhelming feelings like sadness, anger, rejection, or guilt. The causes of these feelings can vary. They can be trying to fit into social groups or cliques, trying to perform academically, and some think they don’t fit into their parents or others’ standards.

Some teens that have nobody to talk to or choose not to talk to anybody feel neglected, unwanted, alone, or depressed. Some teens that can’t get any of this out of their minds, feel that suicide is the only way out. When a teen commits suicide, the question why haunts their parents, friends, family, and even strangers.

In 2009, teen suicide was the 3rd leading cause of death among young adults and adolescents 15 to 24 years of age, following unintentional injuries and homicide. In the United States eleven out of every 100,000 teens commit suicide. The gender ratio for this age group was 3:1 (males: females). In the United States there is an average of 33,000 suicides every year.

It’s very important for people to know the signs that teens have of suicide so they can get the help they need as soon as possible. Some signs of suicide can be risk taking behaviors; loss of interest in school work, changes in eating habits, or withdrawing from family and friends. There are many more signs also; the above are just a few.

Teenage suicide is preventable. By knowing the signs friends, family, and school or community members can show they care by contacting help.

The full moon

By ALLIE UPAH

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! Nope, it’s the FULL MOON!! Legend says that the full moon brings out shocking behavior in people.

This legend is often called “The Lunar Effect” or “The Transylvania Effect.” There is much more violence, aggression, accidents, and suicides around the time the full moon shines. The belief that the moon causes mental disorders and strange behavior was widespread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Some people even buy and sell stocks according to phases of the moon. Others believe that there are more births during a full moon. It appears once every 29.53 days. Sometimes there are two full moons in one month. It is possible to have a month without a full moon, but this doesn’t happen very often and it can happen only in the month of February. The next occurrence happens in February 2018.

So, be extremely cautious leading up to the day of the full moon. Hope to see all of you out in your lawn chairs the next time the full moon comes!

Video games

By JOE BLINK

Nowadays it is virtually impossible to go anywhere or watch anything without seeing an advertisement for a video game. Very rarely is there a lot of hype for a bad video game. That is why it is smart to check out some reviews before one purchases a game, instead of just going to get a video game just because it looks cool.

Sometimes the best reference for a game is your friends, or even watching them play. It will give you an idea of what it’s like. If you want to steal the controller from them and play the game yourself then it would be a good time to see if you like it. Because your friends won’t usually appreciate you asking to borrow a game they just got themselves. If you are on a low budget, or if you don’t want to invest your money in a game, think about buying a used one. A specialty store, like Gamestop or Video Games Etc. will sell used games, and if you don’t like the game you can return it within seven days.

Usually the games you play will be affected by your personal hobbies, like if you enjoy driving you might like a racing game. More often then not games will be more fun if you play them over a long period of time instead of playing them for four days straight, and feeling incredibly empty afterwards. Thinking ahead and knowing what you want in a video game before buying it is a smart consumer habit to practice.

Teen suicide

By LEXIE WILSON

When a teen takes their own life, many people are affected. People who don’t know the person, family members, friends, and teachers are left with a feeling of guilt. It’s important to listen to teens when they need to open up to someone.

Suicide is really rare for children, but it is possible. Suicide is the third leading cause of death from ages 15-24. 60 percent of all suicides are committed with a gun; this is why if you have a gun in your home, it should be unloaded, locked, and hidden away.

Girls think about suicide twice as much as boys do. Girls attempt suicide by drug overdose or by cutting themselves.

Having close friends or family members and talking with someone helps out a lot. Friends should really support each other during their adolescence and high school years because that is when life seems the most difficult.
