Hearings are set for school budgets

Budget hearings are planned next week for Benton Community and Belle Plaine Community School Districts, as schools throughout the state set the financial game plan for next fiscal year.

Belle Plaine

Belle Plaine’s hearing will be held Monday, April 12, at 7 p.m. at the Longfellow Elementary School, 707 Seventh Ave., Belle Plaine. This is at the start of the school board meeting.

Resources will go down from $18.4 million this year to $13.7 next year, according to the proposed budget, as the school wraps up work on school additions at the high school and at Longfellow.

Total spending will drop as well, from $12.2 million to $11.9 million. With carryover funds, the final spending amount is $18.4 million this year, and $13.7 million next fiscal year.

The school’s ending fund balance will go down from $6.2 million this year to $1.7 million next year.

The proposed tax levy is $19.12 per $1,000 of taxable valuation. The general fund levy is $14.47. There are additional levies for instructional support, cash reserve and physical plant and equipment.

Benton Community

Benton Community is also seeing its budget go down, with $30.8 million in resources this year, to $29.6 million next year, as it has seen a decline in enrollment, plus a wrap-up of a school addition project.

Total spending will go down from $22.8 million this year to $21.7 million next year. The ending fund balance will go from $8 million this year to $7.8 million next year. Total requirements, with the carryover, will be $30.8 million this year and $29.8 million next year.

The proposed tax levy is $12.72 per $1,000 of taxable valuation.

The hearing is Wednesday, April 14 at 7 p.m. at the middle-senior high school in Van Horne, at the start of the regular school board meeting.
