Ten-year-old Hannah McLennan’s efforts to help earthquake victims in Haiti received a boost Feb. 19 when members of the Belle Plaine Rotary Club presented her a $400 check.
Hannah launched a community-wide fund drive soon after the Jan. 12 earthquake, hoping to raise $2,000. Since then, donations have reached $1,600, with more expected from several community organizations.
The public has more time to “Help Hannah Help Haiti,” as she named the project. Donation canisters will remain in area business until this Friday, Feb. 26. Hannah will then forward the proceeds to the Red Cross.
Rotary Club president Lon Weber said the organization “passed the hat” to collect personal donations from its members to add to the club’s donation.
In addition to helping Hannah reach her goal, the Belle Plaine Rotary Club donated $200 to the Rotary Foundation for its Shelter Box project for Haitian earthquake relief. The project supplies tents, medical supplies and other necessities needed to shelter and care for 10 people for six months to one year.
