Plainsmen open season with win over HLV last Friday, 14-6
|
Belle Plaine’s football team opened its season with a 14-6 win over Class A team HLV Friday night at Victor.
A 14-point effort in the second quarter was all the scoring Belle Plaine needed, as Brian Crow ran it in from seven yards out, and Seivon Steward broke free for a 48-yard run. HLV’s lone score came from Bryce Kuesel on a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
Belle Plaine had 234 yards, powered by 204 yards in rushing. HLV had 209 yards and 13 first downs. Belle Plaine had nine first downs.
Brian Crow led Belle Plaine in rushing with 89 yards and a touchdown. Steward added 65 yards and a touchdown.
Raymond Edgar had three tackles for loss. Ryan Rupp had 10 total tackles. Keegan DeMeulenaere had five solo tackles. Tony Jones also recovered an HLV fumble.
Coach Todd Bohlen said, “The game was a hard fought victory for us. We were short-handed going into the game due to ineligibilities and lost several key players to injury and cramps by halftime. I thought our young guys who were thrown into the fire did a nice job of holding on to the win for us.
“There were some glaring defensive breakdowns as well as many missed blocking assignments that we need to clear up before next Friday night. This Friday we will be seeing an entirely different type of offense, as Highland Riverside likes to go shotgun with five quick receivers and throw the ball all over the field. Hopefully the weather will cooperate a little better this week and allow for us to have a better week of preparation than last week.”
