Bobcats lose by one to CPU
|
It was a tale of two halves for the Benton Community football team last Friday night, as they went into the fourth quarter last week with a 13-0 lead, and then lost on two big plays, 14-13, in non-district action at Van Horne.
Benton had more first downs and yards that the Pointers, but a lost fumble led to a touchdown, as did a long run by CPU’s Dylan Ramsey.
Benton’s Zach Twedt had 25 rushes for 40 yards, and was 7 of 11 in passing for 93 yards. Mitch Lester caught six passes for 73 yards. Justin Lopata caught one for 20 yards. Lopata also sparked the BC team with five punt returns for 76 yards.
Mark Himmelsbach rushed for a Benton touchdown. Wes Anderson was 2 for 3 in field goals.
Benton had 207 yards, to 161 for CPU.
With eight tackles each were Twedt and Derrick Schulte. Schulte and Jeff Toney each had one tackle for loss. Robert Rathje had one fumble recovery.
Coach Shawn Pfiffner said, “Life is full of shoulda, coulda, and woulda’s. Had we put four quarters of Bobcat football together, we win the game going away. I am hoping that at the end of the season, we look back at this game as a blessing. My hope is that we can say we learned from our mistakes and this loss made us a better football team. There is so much potential. I know this entire team, players and coaches, will work their tails off to get to the next level.”
Benton travels to South Tama this Friday night in the second week of non-district football action.
