Sunday afternoon fire is investigated in Atkins

The State Fire Marshal’s office is continuing an investigation into a fire that occurred Sunday at 12:40 p.m. at 314 Second Ave., Atkins.

According to Gary Lange, Atkins Fire Chief, the fire department was notified at 12:40 p.m. to what started as an attic fire, which then spread to the rest of the house. They were on the scene until the storms blew through the area later in the evening. The department had mutual aid assistance from the Newhall, Shellsburg and Fairfax fire departments.

The Jim Ferring family resided at the house. Lange said the three residents of the house were all out safely, and the fire department also rescued a cat from the house. Lange said the family is now staying with other family members. Several people were at the house, he said, observing the community’s Watermelon Days celebration.
