The City of Belle Plaine, in partnership with the Belle Plaine Community Development Corporation, continues efforts to move forward with the downtown revitalization project. It is looking more and more like there will be some construction underway this fall and, in all likelihood, this will be in relation to the 35 building facades of owners that signed on with the program. As much as we would like to move with the streetscape portion of the project this fall, it is the general consensus that starting a project of this magnitude with winter starring us in the face would create undue obstacles.
Just last week we submitted two additional project proposals for I-JOBS Main Street funding in the amount of $500,000 for the streetscape and $1.6 million for the facade master plan. This opportunity came out of nowhere after we were denied funding from Vision Iowa and is additional funding above and beyond what we have already secured. As a Main Street Iowa community, we were invited to submit a proposal for I-JOBS funding as we are considered a priority project because of all the work we have done to make this project happen. This was a challenge, as we had seven days to get the proposal ready and should know by July 1 if we will receive some funding.
If we are successful in securing some of this I-JOBS funding, we must be ready to be under construction within 60 days of signing the grant contract. Believe me, 60 days for final design, bid letting and construction contracts is a real push, but we are confident with this kind of money on the line, we can and will make it happen. So the good citizens of Belle Plaine could be looking at some construction getting underway in the downtown area sometime in October. If you have questions, please contact City Administrator Bill Daily for further information.
