Appleglen farms were founded in 1961, when the family moved from Mississippi to Appleglen Township, therefore the name. Its owner, Juanda Prelle, operated the dairy with help of her children, Ivan, Alesia, Denise, and Berna, but primarily with the help of her oldest daughter Cheri and son-in-law Jim Summerfield. Juanda operated the farm until 1985 when she semi-retired. The Summerfields became partners in 1998. The dairy is not an average dairy and has produced an Arkansas State Show Grand Champion. The dairy cattle have won many state and local awards. Appleglen dairy holds the current state milk record of 40,410 pounds of milk in 365 days at 11 ½ years of age. In most years the dairy produces nearly 2,000,000 pounds of milk. We graze the dairy cattle on ryegrass and bermuda grass, and they receive orchard grass hay in winter and still maintain high production. They are unique in that their name calls them into the barn. The goal of the dairy is to produce a profitable cow, efficient, long-lived, and easy on the eyes.

Applenglen Poultry was established 1992. In this year the family built three modern-state-of-the-art hen houses. We produce eggs for hatching for Peterson Ind. These chicks grow into the broilers or fryers, sold in the supermarket. We began with about 8000 hens and 800 roosters, in each of the three houses. The hens are quite prolific, usually laying 80% or above, or 21,000 eggs per day at their peak, with 90% or more of the eggs hatching.
