On the night of July 17, 1969, Democrat Senator of Massachusetts, Ted Kennedy was attending a party at Martha's Vinyard with a group of young people involved in Democrat politics. At about 11 PM, after a night of drinking, he left the party, unannounced, with a young lady named Mary Jo Kopechne. Shortly thereafter, Kennedy's Oldsmobile flipped off a small bridge, landing upside down in the water. Kennedy escaped. Mary Jo drowned after Kennedy left her in the sunken car. The next day, after several attempts at having someone else take the blame, he finally reported the accident to authorities.

As tragic as miss Kophechne's death was, it effectively ended Kennedy's aspirations of following his brother to the Presidency of the United States. In the ensuing years, Kennedy has proven to be one of the very top rabidly liberal senators in the US Congress. Had Kennedy made the ascension, it is fair to say the United States would be a far more liberal country than it is today. For that, her death can be considered a positive outcome.
