An experiment gone awry is the theme of Firestarter, the eventual product of which was the pyrokinetic child Charlie McGee (Drew Barrymore). After dismissing Charlie's parents Andy and Vicky (David Keith and Heather Locklear) as a failure, The Shop - the secret government agency that conducted the experiments and headed by a shadowy figure named Rainbird (George C. Scott) - again showed intense interest to the child, which was later found to be able to incinerate things by sheer will alone. The manhunt of her family eventually resulted to the death Vicky and the capture of her and Andy. Initially Charlie resisted the urge to use her powers while under renewed experimentation by the Shop operatives, but another tragedy changed her mind. Using her unusual ability to conjure fire, Charlie then laid waste to the Shop complex where she was imprisoned, enabling her to escape her captors.
