Cassey Jordan (Loretta Devine) is an unfit mother. She always sides with her boyfriend Reggie, (Clifton Powell) over her daughter. Even when it is apparent that Reggie is molesting and beating Michelle (Kimberly Elise), Cassey turns her back and kicks her young teenage daughter out of the house. Years later, Michelle has been involved in drugs and prostitution as well as doing time in prison. Upon her release, Michelle wants to make things up with her mother. However, Cassey is still with Reggie and refuses to have anything to do with her daughter. Michelle hits the streets again. Not long after that, Michelle encounters a revival. She has become tired of her life and is ready to start anew. But when the altar call is given and she rushes to repent, she sees that Reggie is there as well. It appears he has decided to turn over a new leaf as well. All the memories of past abuse rush to Michelle’s head and before anyone can stop her, she kills him. Now she is on death row. As she examines the events that led up to her conviction, she wonders if things might have been different.
