Regarding Size
95% of churches in America have less than 350 people
75% of churches in America have less than 100 people
Regarding Impact
The terms large and small are not superior / inferior terms (they are value free)
Both types of ministries have strengths and weaknesses
Small ministries tend to be more intimate and involved regarding relationships
Large ministries tend to be more organized and able to offer more programs
Regarding Current Trends
Farm Population decreased from 30% in 1920 to 1.9% in 1990
Rural Population grew 4.9% between 1986 & 1989 in towns less than 2500 people
Urban Population only grew 2.7% during 1986 & 1989
25 % of people in the United States live in towns of less than 2500 people
Regarding the Future Trends
33% of the United States are Baby Boomers (1946-64) who will be retiring soon
34% of them want to live in small towns
22% want to live on a farm.
Baby Busters (1965-1983) desire isolation and will not be able to afford city life
The way they listen to their music is characteristic of the way they desire to live
They will be the first generation to live at a lower standard of living than their parents
Regarding Ministry
The ability to influence your world for Christ is everything! With the current trends and the future trends blending together, there has never been a brighter future for rural ministries. It looks like a field white unto harvest.
The blending of the rural and the urban together will force rural ministries and churches to evaluate their ministries. Many of the denominations are withdrawing from the small communities in search of greener pastures. We must learn from Sam Walton, who went into the small towns when the larger department stores started pulling out. His leagacy was Walmart. What will our leagacy be as Bible believing Christians?
